Refractive Index. The refractive index (RI) is the degree to which light bends (refraction) when passing through a medium. It can also be defined as the sine of the angle of incidence divided by the sine of the angle of refraction, as light passes from air to the substance. The RI can be measured accurately by a refractometer.
DetailsThe following table lists these values for selected gemstones. For gemologists, refractive index and double refraction ( birefringence) serve as important clues for identifying gems. The following table lists these values for a variety of stones found in jewelry and gem collections. Rubies and spinels may show similar colors.
DetailsThe controllability of the effective refractive index (by the fill factor f) of a subwavelength grating enables applications such as phase plates. A refractive surface, such as shown in Fig. 17(a), may be modeled as a single, planar, laterally graded index layer with a fixed thickness if the x-dependent phase accumulation provided by the refractive surface …

DetailsThe refractive index n of a transparent optical medium, also called the index of refraction, is the factor by which the phase velocity vph is decreased relative to the velocity of light in vacuum: Here, one assumes linear propagation (i.e. with low optical intensities) of plane waves . Via the phase velocity, the refractive index also ...
DetailsNov 01, 2001· The equation provides a relation for calculating the refractive index of a crude oil 'mixture' from the refractive indices of its various components, namely maltenes and asphaltenes. This means an alternate relation exists for estimating the refractive index of bitumen: (6) n 2 −1 n 2 +2 = n M 2 −1 n M 2 +2 f M + n A 2 −1 n A 2 +2 f A ...
DetailsSep 28, 2014· Opaque materials have complex refractive index. If the imaginary part is much less then the real part, the reflection is determined by the real part, but the transmittance is reduced exponentially with the thickness and the exponent is …
DetailsThe instrument has an analysis range of 0.1 μm to 750 μm and can derive parameters such as refractive index as well as shading ratio for various media. The test parameters were set as follows: the background sampling time was 10 s, the single sampling time was also set to 10 s, and the result type was volume (V). ... Asphalt/water emulsion ...
DetailsMany materials have a well-characterized refractive index, but these indexes often depend strongly upon the frequency of light, causing optical dispersion.Standard refractive index measurements are taken at the "yellow doublet" sodium D line, with a wavelength (λ) of 589 nanometers. There are also weaker dependencies on temperature, pressure/stress, etc., …
DetailsSep 15, 2022· For instance, the refractive index of water is 1.333 which means that the speed of light in a vacuum is 1.333 times faster than the speed of light in water. The refractive index being a ratio between two similar quantities is a unitless quantity. It is a pure ratio. Formula. The refractive index could be mathematically stated as (n = frac{c ...
DetailsThe refractive index of calcium fluoride, CaF2, has been measured from 600 nm to 175 nm and the resulting values agree with a traditional goniometric measurement to within 1× 10–5. The uncertainty in the index values is currently limited by the uncertainty in the thickness measurement of the etalon. Key words: calcium fluoride; etalon;
