In the early 21st century, Fort McMurray became the capital of Canada's burgeoning tar sands industry. It originated as a North West Company fur-trading post (1790) known as Fort of the Forks, which was taken over by the Hudson's Bay Company (1821). Rebuilt in 1875, it was renamed Fort McMurray after a company factor, William McMurray.
